JLGB GET IN THE PARTY SPIRIT AT “CELEBRATION” SUMMER CAMP 2010

This year the JLGB celebrates its 115th anniversary and the JLGB got into the party atmosphere with this year’s Summer Camp theme of Celebration. Each day the JLGB celebrated a different part of JLGB with days dedicated to England, Scotland, Wales, Canada and Israel. Highlight Activities included: Time Elevator, where JLGB members travelled back in time to met the founder of JLGB – Col Albert E W Goldsmid as they raced through time to visit different decades of the last 115 years; Giant Volleyball – JLGB was founded in 1895, the same year that the first game of volleyball was ever played. JLGB Camp celebrated volleyball’s 115th birthday with a slight adaption of using a 6ft giant inflatable ball.

JLGB’S SARAH LASHER IS THE CHILDREN’S AID COMMITTEE YOUNG VOLUNTEER AWARD WINNER 2010

JLGB’s Sarah Lasher was awarded The Children’s Aid Committee Young Volunteer Award at the recent Jewish Volunteer Awards 2010. The awards were hosted by the Jewish Volunteer Network (JVN) and HW Fisher & Company. It was not difficult for JLGB to nominate Sarah for this Award, which recognises an individual of school age who has made an exceptional contribution to the Jewish voluntary sector. JLGB Chief Executive Neil Martin said: “Sarah is the epitome of a young leader and ambassador for young people; she is enthusiastic, committed to the JLGB and through our leadership training courses, she has gained great leadership skills and confidence.”

NEWCASTLE JLGB THE PLACE TO BE!

The New Newcastle JLGB for ages 8 – 16, part of the JLGB’s Bite Size Project, is holding their next activities packed session on Sunday 20th June. The session will run from 1.00pm – 4.00pm, at Lionel Jacobson House and is for those aged 8 – 16. Local leader, Judith Levene, said “We have a fantastic programme lined up for the afternoon. The first two meetings of JLGB in Newcastle were a great success and we are expecting even more new members to come along. As well as taking part in all the planned activities they will have a chance to socialise and make new friends.”

THE NEW BRIGHTON JLGB ROCKS!

Brighton JLGB is now fully up and running and everyone who has taken part in the sessions so far have had a great time. Ralli Hall is now the place to be on Sunday evenings for fun, friendship and so much more. Local JLGB leader, Jonathan Phillips said: “We have some great activities planned including: Sushi Making, Unihoc, Arts & Crafts, Football, Sign Language, Outings, Campcraft, Team Challenges, First Aid and much much more. New members are arriving each week and having a great time socialising and meeting new friends. We know that the word will spread and more members will come along and enjoy everything that JLGB has to offer.”

ANTONY LANE’S MARATHON RUN FOR THE JEWISH LADS’ & GIRLS’ BRIGADE

JLGB Leader Antony Lane ran the Virgin London Marathon for the sole purpose of raising funds for the Jewish Lads’ & Girls’ Brigade. He pledged to run, walk or crawl the 26 plus miles to make sure he completed the task. His target of £3,000 has nearly been reached and he is also hoping to go above that magic figure as donations are still coming in. In this, the JLGB’s 115th Anniversary year, Antony has carried on the family tradition following in the footsteps of his father, Lewis "Bronco" Lane, who also raised many thousands of pounds for JLGB.

JLGB REPRESENTED BY LIZZY LEIGH ON TS PETCHEY’S MAIDEN VOYAGE DOWN THE THAMES

One of JLGB’s outstanding Achievement Award winner’s Lizzy Leigh was delighted to represent The Jewish Lads’ & Girls’ Brigade on the maiden voyage down the Thames of TS Jack Petchey. The event was to mark the close of the Jack Petchey Foundation's tenth anniversary year and to celebrate the £7million donated to uniformed groups by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Jack Petchey Achievement Awards are given for many reasons and Lizzy received hers in recognition of her outstanding commitment to JLGB and to JLGB Hendon Band. Lizzy has suggested that the grant be spent on musical instruments and towards an outing for everyone in the Band.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, for which the JLGB is the ONLY Jewish Operating Authority, is open to young people between the ages of 14 and 25. To achieve the Bronze, Silver or Gold award participants have to complete an activity in each of the four separate sections.
