60 young Jewish musicians aged 11-16 from across the UK joined together for JLGB Band Camp.
The musical training weekend for woodwind, brass and percussion players of all levels included musicians from Redbridge, Hendon, Manchester, Leeds and the JLGB’s newest band in Hertfordshire.
Linda Diamond, JLGB’s National Bands' Director said: “We haven't had a Band Camp for a few years, but the numbers in all JLGB Bands have been increasing rapidly, so we wanted to bring everyone together to learn some new music and to bond as one big JLGB Band family."
Music at the weekend included: The music of Mamma Mia, a Michael Jackson Greatest Hits Medley, Israeli and Jewish songs, Pirates of the Caribbean and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" as featured in the new US hit TV show "Glee".
Tamara Gold, 14, an alto saxophone player from JLGB Manchester Band said: "OMG! The weekend was amazing, I got to see all my friends from London, we got to pick the music and we played Don't Stop Believin' from Glee!!"
Elkie Myers, 15, clarinetist from JLGB Redbridge Band said: “I'm 1000% better at my clarinet now, the weekend has really made me a much better musician - I can't wait till JLGB Summer Camp where we will perform our new music for the first time".
Toby Olins, 12, a tuba player from the new JLGB Band in Hertfordshire said: “I'm brand new to JLGB, I've only been in the band 3 weeks and I'm really really enjoying it. I love playing all the music and I’ve made some really good new friends from all the different bands”.
JLGB teaches young Jewish people musical instruments from beginners to advanced, and there are bands in Redbridge, Hendon, Manchester, Leeds and Hertfordshire.
