JLGB STRUCTURE
OBJECT
The Object of the Jewish Lads’ & Girls’ Brigade is to train its members in loyalty, honour, discipline and self-respect, that they shall become worthy and useful citizens and a credit to their country and their community.
MOTTO
“They go from strength to strength”
The Brigade motto is taken from the Bible – Psalm 84, Verse 8.
MEMBERSHIP
There are Brigade units throughout the country. Jewish boys and girls can become members of a Junior Unit between the ages of 8-11, and members of a Senior Unit (a Company or a Band) from the age of 11.
HOW THE BRIGADE WORKS
All the Companies within a specific area combine to form a Battalion, and Battalions in turn combine to form Regiments. The Battalions in Greater London and the South East of England (Lazarus, Manches and Swaythling – named after former Brigade Commandants) form the London Regiment, while the Battalions and Companies in all other areas combine to form the Provincial Regiment.
RANKS
JLGB is a rank-structured organisation – all members have a rank based on their age, qualification and responsibilities. Members of the rank of Lance Corporal and above are referred to as “Non-Commissioned Officers” or “NCOs”.
Adult leaders in the Brigade are Officers, Warrant Officers, or Unit Assistants. Officers and Warrant Officers have ranks, but Unit Assistants do not. ALL Members and ALL Warrant Officers should salute ALL Officers.
Your Company’s Senior Officer is the Company Commander, and he or she will usually have other Officers, Warrant Officers or Unit Assistants to help run the Company. The Warrant Officers at a Company are Company Sergeant Majors or Platoon Sergeant Majors.
Your Battalion’s Senior Officer is the Battalion Commander, and the Senior Warrant Officer is the Battalion Sergeant Major.
Your Regiment’s Senior Officer is the Regimental Commander, and the Senior Warrant Officer is the Regimental Sergeant Major.
